My name is Christiaan Joseph Lewis. I live in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire but was born in Botswana, on a cattle farm. When I was two years old, I totally lost my sight. I have lived in England for more than 40 years, working as a Physiotherapist. Whilst taking a modern literature degree with The Open University I developed an interest in creative writing. Since then I have had 3 books published. The title of my present publication is The Scent of Rain. For this book I have assumed an Afrikaans name, i.e. Josef Lewies.
It reflects life on an isolated farm in Botswana, describing the existence of the people and animals, their isolated daily life and the myths and legends of the inhabitants. Although the book largely consists of a number of short stories, it is all held together by a central character, i.e. the country.
Every year now, I return to this magnificent land with its gentle native folk. Whenever life becomes hectic, it is such a great privilege to return to a place filled with peace and silence, when the afternoon dust settles, the clouds gather, the sun hides and the scent of rain fills the air, all signifying the imminent onslaught of an African storm.
The Scent of Rain captures that distinctive African atmosphere.
Set on a cattle farm in Botswana, southern Africa. This book consists of a selection of short stories with a central theme, that is the land. Some of the stories convey the isolation and some tell of the daily workings of a cattle farm. There are also Bushman legends and ghost stories, with the author's experience as a child, blind from the age of two.
The pages are filled with conversation, atmosphere and vivid memories, of a country where the past is most reluctant to make way for the present.
