Once more Congleton are to run their tremendously popular One Act Play Festival, which attracts scripts from around the globe.  The festival is to be held on the 18th July 2009 at Daneside Theatre, where the Players will perform the selected entrants’ work and the overall winners will be announced before prizes awarded.  The biennial event invites budding playwrights of all ages to submit their efforts for consideration, there are few stipulations but anyone considering entering should first of all send for guidelines rather than just blindly posting off plays.  Each of the four scripts finally chosen by the committee is overseen by an experienced producer, acted out by a seasoned cast and stands the chance of winning a cash prize if voted for by the evening’s audience.  Whilst the final four battle it out for honours all playwrights who enter are invited to attend the festival.

Full guidelines are available now from Deirdre Melia, 22, Trinity Place, Congleton, CW12 3JB.  The players are looking forward to a wide range of scripts and plays of all kinds, so whether you’re a novice hiding their light under a bushel or a regular scribe, all entries are appreciated and judged on their own merits. On your marks, get set, type…….

We are looking for writer's who have had a greetings message or poem published in a greetings card (preferably a Christmas card).

We are in the early stages of putting together ideas for a Christmas film insert for The One Show (BBC1, 7pm) and one of them was to look into the history of the Christmas card, which was first designed by John Callcott Horsley, and compare it to cards in the present day. A side story would be to speak to a writer about what they do and their thoughts etc.

Filming may take place around August 18th, however this will be confirmed nearer the time and when we have a definite 'yes' to go ahead with the project.

If you could send this out to all members of NAWG that would be much appreciated. My contact details are below.

If you have any other queries, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards

Naomi

Author Express is a new business venture that doubles as an organisation that aims to help both aspiring authors get their manuscripts published and aiding publishers in their search for good books. By doing this, we hope that it will improve the already excellent variety of published books by bringing to the fore many good books that may have otherwise been overlooked.

We do this by hosting a website ( www.authorexpress.co.uk ) that advertises a sample manuscript which is easily available to commissioning editors engaged in the business of publishing. This sample includes a synopsis, which should be designed to ‘sell’ the book, a sample of the manuscript, and 3 additional titles from the same author that he/she may have written.

It is displayed on a publisher friendly website which is categorised, easy to read, and generally pleasant to the eyes. Additional services are also available to the publishers which are designed to aid them in finding a suitable author for a commissioned work.

We also keep a database of all submitted manuscripts (for a limited period of time) in case a publisher should request previous submissions, at a later date, in search of a particular type of book.

Each submission is displayed for the duration of one calendar month (Standard Service). Should a publisher express an interest in any of the submissions, we inform the author and undertake to pass on to the publisher a means of contacting the author, at which time our responsibility ends. We do not act as literary agents.

Wanted ghost writer

I have self-published a book - fiction - I wrote based on some real life situations I encountered when I was living in Medway, Kent. I want to publish it again - but would like it to be re-written, so as to make it appear better than what it is now. I have discussed this and I was told  that I should look for a ghost writer to help me out. I am hoping I can get someone to help me out. Thanks. Peter Martin.

Waterstone’s Guide to Getting Published

The idea of becoming a writer is one that appeals to countless people. However, while the writing process is simple enough to understand, publishing is a mystery to most. Much is written about how difficult it is to get published, how important it is to have an agent and how some books sell in their hundreds of thousands whilst others struggle to sell in three figures. The classic quote states that everyone has a book in them, but how does one go about getting it published?

To help aspiring writers, Waterstones.com has launched The Waterstone’s Guide to Getting Published. Full of plain, simple advice on everything from the role of an agent to how to approach a publisher, it provides essential tips on alternative routes to the reader via self-publishing and blogging. This is the first activity in The Writer’s Year, a 12-month calendar of events and activities highlighting the role of the author and the special relationship between writers and readers.  “We can’t guarantee the Guide will get you a book deal, but it will make the process of trying a lot less scary.  Sometimes the difference between getting published can be a matter of just following a few simple rules, so reading our guide could make all the difference,” editor, Greg Eden.

The Guide can be found at www.waterstones.com/writersyear

The Frontlist www.thefrontlist.com

The project is set to overhaul the process by which unsolicited manuscripts for fictional novels get considered by publishing houses. We have been developing The Frontlist for the last two years, with the intention of allowing communities of writers to self-select high quality work through the provision of detailed online critiques of each other’s work.

The project differs substantially from any other, in that it allows writers to easily annotate and critique work according to pre-set criteria and perhaps more importantly, we have an agreement with a senior editor at Picador to consider top reviewed work each month.

We are now calling for writers with completed, unpublished fictional novels, to consider submitting samples to The Frontlist.

In addition to having work critiqued by an impartial audience and gaining the chance to have work seen by a respected publisher, new writers will also be helping to pioneer a new process that we feel has the potential to change the way that publishers look to discover new talent.

Find more information on the website: www.thefrontlist.com

Write for World Hum

World Hum seeks smart, engaging submissions for three sections: Dispatches, Speaker’s Corner and How To. Paste your submission into the body of an e-mail – we will not open attachments – and send it to one of the corresponding addresses:

Dispatches are first-person travel narratives. Send yours to: dispatches@worldhum.com

Speaker’s Corner allows readers and writers to rant or rave about any travel-related subject. Send your piece to: speakerscorner@worldhum.com

How To reveals ways to dive deep into another culture. Send your idea to: howto@worldhum.com.

Click on the appropriate address into your e-mail. Include the word “dispatch” in the subject line for Dispatches, “speaker’s corner” for Speaker’s Corner and “how to” for How To. Any e-mails without these words in the subject line may get deleted by our spam filters. Also: Include your name and a few words about yourself and your story.

Due to the high volume of submissions we are unable to respond to every e-mail. We will contact you as soon as possible if we would like to publish your story.

We are unable to pay for stories at this time, though we have started accepting advertising and hope to compensate writers as soon as it’s financially possible. Meanwhile, all contributors will gain exposure in one of the few publications, print or digital, dedicated to publishing high-quality travel writing. World Hum stories are read by editors of leading travel publications and anthologies. Stories from the site have appeared in “The Best American Travel Writing” anthologies and Travelers’ Tales anthologies, and they have won Lowell Thomas awards from the Society of American Travel Writers.

Thanks for thinking of World Hum and for supporting independent publishing.

The Unwritten Rules to Submitting Work to Magazines
An extremely useful article to download

Please do not...
bulletSend a link to your work. Please select the exact items you wish to submit.
bulletSubmit more than once per issue. This does not increase your chances of getting published. In fact, it may decrease them.
bulletWrite 'Aesthetica Submission' in the subject line. You need to be more specific than that.
bulletExpect to be published because you have submitted.

Further notes
bulletIt is essential that opinion pieces - reviews, articles, columns, essays, etc. - consist of a well-formulated and well-researched argument. The topic of the piece is entirely up to the writer - they consider opinion pieces in an entirely objective manner.
bulletAesthetica is unable to pay contributors for submissions, however a complimentary copy of the magazine will be provided.
