There’s still time to book the workshop of your choice at this year’s Annual Festival of Writing at Durham in September. The National Association of Writers’ Groups’ annual event has seven tutors each leading three workshops covering a wide range of writing topics.

Festival favourite Steve Bowkett is offering visualisation, writing for children and how to beat writer’s block, while Marvin Close covers writing comedy, writing a one-person stage play plus editing and rewriting.

For the poets among you, Alison Chisholm offers ‘Idea to poem,’ ‘The child is father of the man,’ and ‘Recycled poetry.’

James Nash has workshops on ‘The poetry gym,’ ‘Headspace – getting into your character’ and ‘Transforming your performance.’

Simon Whaley hosts three workshops on non-fiction writing, covering writing letters to the editor, interviewing, and article writing

Iain Pattison deals with plots, dialogue and beating the slush pile.

Lynne Hackles suggests recipes for success, twist-end stories and beginnings, middles and ends.

The Festival of Writing is to be held at Van Mildert College, University of Durham, on 5th, 6th and 7th September. On the evening of the 6th, the Gala Dinner will be followed by the Award Ceremony, where winners and runners-up in the annual NAWG competitions will receive their prizes.

NAWG’s newest publication, The Handy Little Book of Writing for Children by Steve Bowkett, will be launched at the event, and there will be other attractions and displays over the weekend.

If you’ve never fancied a writing weekend before, try the one at Durham. You’ll meet like-minded people, from beginners to experts, all gathered to express their interest in the skill and craft of writing.
