Breadcrumbs
He found me eating cheese on toast in the bath. He didn't say anything.
I heard him search for his own supper. The crackle of a pasta packet. I imagined the kitchen counter: butter, cheddar, bread. I had left him a note in case there had been a delay on the train line, a signal failure, a death.
I submerged my body into the water and the crumbs that had landed on my chest floated like snowflakes.
If I held myself here long enough, he might come back. Pull me out of the water, brush my hair, feed me fusilli.
